When I have spent hours working on knitting a sweater, I want to make sure it looks as good after a dozen washes as it did the day I was knitting it. In very simple cases, knitting can be done without tools, using only the fingers to do these tasks; however, knitting is usually carried out using tools such as knitting needles, knitting machines or rigid frames.
It is a good idea to keep the knitting yarn draped over the right forefinger, this keeps it to the back of the work too. A key factor in knitting is stitch definition, corresponding to how well complicated stitch patterns can be seen when made from a given yarn. However, such circular wales are possible using Swiss darning, a form of embroidery, or by knitting a tube separately and attaching it to the knitted fabric.
However, these numbers can differ from one country to another. I then lay the knitting on a flat clean towel. It can be a humbling experience to the perfectionist.
